The Source January 1997 issue - 1996 Year in Review

After a few months and a few breaks at home, I’ve decided to scan and post this entire issue for the patient ones among you. With a little free time this coming weekend (if my daughter stays asleep), I may get to that February issue but don’t hold your breath. I would like to get to the Biggie and Wu-Tang issues at some point before 2010, though. For those of you who care to answer, what is your opinion of '97 hip-hop vs. '96 hip-hop? Better, worse, or about the same? What about the rise of Bad Boy and No Limit Records in '97? Was that good for hip-hop overall? What about the explosion of underground hip-hop? Is there any underground artist from '97 that you wish had blown up in the mainstream?

  1. I don't really have to much to say about the music that was coming out in '97, but I was glad to see Master P and the whole No Limit crew starting to shine. Being from the Bay Area, I remember when No Limit records started off as a record shop in Richmond CA.

  2. 96 was better if we talk about ''mainstream'' hip hop even dough i think that word MAINSTREAM isn't right word, but ok, i hope u know what i'm thinkin of....but 97 definetlly was better for underground, new names...THANK FOR POSTING, VINCENT! Greetings from Belgrade!!!!

  4. Nine-Tre 2 '96 was the shiznit!
In '97 snoop started to slip and I was still in shock that there was no more pac. I bought every unreleased pac item available at the time - damn I wish I had the net back then. Yo! MTV raps was a good source for my rap addiction too! Living in Australia was hard for a rap fan back then and imports was expensive!
